How do you know if you have a TMJ disorder or TMJ Syndrome™?

A healthy jaw joint allows ease of jaw function in chewing, talking and movement in all directions and there are no sounds, no popping or clicking or restrictions and no pain. No pain while yawning or chewing and no discomfort or akward bite after a normal cleaning appointment.

The most obvious signs of a TMJ disorder: popping and or clicking, pain around the ears, joint pain, Temple headaches, jaw pain, pain when chewing, limited opening, pain when yawning. These signs make it easy for the average person to realize that their joint is a problem. Treating this early on, is always better than trying to endure the problems and or ignoring it. Severe symptoms will eventually cause great discomfort and other medical conditions that would best be avoided. When the condition worsens and causes other medical conditions it is very difficult for most practitioners to diagnose the original cause and that is why patients go from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what is wrong with them. This condition is what I call TMJ Syndrome™.

TMJ Syndrome™ is very complex!

When you have a variety of symptoms but they don’t seem at all connected to your jaw joint you could have TMJ Syndrome™. Below are the potential symptoms that could very well be the result of an undiagnosed TMJ disorder:

Tooth pain
Burning tongue
Headaches
Ear Aches
Eye pain
Neck pain
Bad bite
Worn teeth
Loss of gum tissue (recession)
Worn roots around the gum line (abfractions)
Chipping teeth
Broken teeth
Bony Growth under the tongue (Tori)

Tinnitus (ringing of the ears)
Stuffiness of the ears
Vertigo (dizziness)
Asymmetrical facial features
Crowded teeth (malocclusion)
Underdeveloped Jaw
Mouth breathing
Poor sleep
Anxiety
Light sensitivity
Cold hands or feet
High levels of Cortisone (stress hormone)
Adrenal Fatigue

Forward head posture
Poor memory
Bad posture
Undiagnosed body pain
Chronic pain syndrome
Depression
Poor mood
Stressed out
Muscle weakness
Brain Fog
Poor digestion
Poor overall health

TMJ Syndrome™ can include a variety of the above symptoms and others that for most people would have no way of linking it to a TMJ disorder.

If your doctor has not resolved your problems it would be best to have an evaluation for TMJ Syndrome™/Disorder.

What causes TMJ?

There are many reasons but the majority of cases involve microtrauma from repetitive physical stresses causing breakdown of the joint complex. Nighttime clenching and or grinding and daytime clenching or grinding over time cause the breakdown of joint tissues. Clenching or chewing while sleeping has forces that are 5 times more powerful than daytime chewing forces. The body needs 7-8  hours of restorative sleep to repair the wearing down of the body from the day. These night time stresses on the joint prevent the repair from occurring. Other causes could be blunt trauma from an accident and Avascular Necrosis (a lack of blood supply to the joint while in developmental stages), but these are rare.

How is TMJ Treated?

After a thorough diagnosis, most patients are treated with customized Orthotics that decompress the jaw joint complex 24 hours per day 7 days per week. The orthotics can be compared to wearing a cast on a broken leg. Stabilizing the joints allows healing and prevents the trauma from occurring. In addition to the orthotic treatment we use cold laser therapy (biomodulation) that increases blood supply, removes toxins, stimulates mitochondrial activity to energize all the cells for healing purposes. The laser also decreases inflammation and pain. Many patients feel instant relief from the MLS laser negating the use of pain meds. Your choice of food can be very toxic as our modern society is far from the natural way that was intended for supplying us with good healthy nutrition. However, making some smart livable choices is the way to go.

Blood studies can also show a deficiency of very important vitamins and minerals and guidance here is a significant help in your total health. Gut health is also very important for overall health and we can recommend ways to accomplish the gut health you desire. Probiotics and prebiotics that get through the stomach acid are more effective than other forms of Probiotics. Dietary enzymes help our stomachs break down the foods we eat and that increases our diet potency. Another major factor is achieving deep sleep. Both N3 deep sleep and REM deep sleep are important and the total amount of each needs to be proper for a full restoration of your brain and body. Out of 90 years of life, we sleep for 30 years. Obviously, sleep has a major influence on the quality of our life. What works well if the batteries are not fully charged? We can provide a home sleep study using a medical grade sleep device that fits over your finger. No wires or lines, just the ring. This data is read by the Medical doctors for your diagnosis and I personally review the report with you.

Correcting the physical and chemical/nutritional problems that contribute to poor sleep is another part of our treatment. Our techniques are non surgical. In some cases, the tissues of the jaw joint are severely damaged and it may be necessary to use natural biologicals to regenerate those tissues. The natural biologicals come from your own blood. By harvesting the stem cells, white blood cells and platelets and using a simple injection technique, your body will heal better than any other known way. This technique is called PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin). This PRF avoids anticoagulants and very specific collection tubes to prevent negative immune responses and achieves healing over  a 3-4 week period. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is no longer an acceptable way to treat joints as there are inherent problems that are avoided using PRF.

How successful is treatment?

We have a success rate of over 95%. Patients that have a more complicated condition usually need additional treatment from other specialists. Our goal is to do what we can before referring you out to other specialist to help reduce time and cost to you.

What are the alternative to this treatment?

Due to the complexity of TMJ and the degree of damage, alternative treatments are difficult to  suggest. However, anything that you can do to improve your own health status may provide some relief. The triangle of health model is based on three things: Mechanical problems, Psychological problems and Chemical Nutritional problems. If you can learn how to correct your diet , decrease stresses (both physical and emotional), improve your restorative sleep, you can surely improve your overall health. Joint rehabilitation requires orthopedic therapy to stop the recurring damage. My goal is to help you by direct treatment and advisory treatment to help you rebuild your overall health.
